Information for
new students in Canberra
If you are,
or planning to be, a new student in Canberra, you may
find the following information helpful in settling down in a new city, and a
foreign country if you are coming from outside Australia.
Initially you may find Canberra a lonely and
strange place but like us you will soon discover that
it is indeed the best place in the world to live! Association
and members of our community have always welcomed new students and gave
them the support they needed. Please do not hesitate to contact them if
necessary.
Student members of the Association have
compiled the following checklist (in some order) as a guide for you to
settle in Canberra:

complete
the official admission and registration formalities of your academic
institution
-
collect Student Id, library card, computer
login password etc.

open a bank account
-
collect Medibank Private card from either
Belconnen or City office
-
lodge a Tax File number application at the
Australian Taxation Office in Canberra City office
-
off campus students - check with all real
estate agents and look at Saturday issue of Canberra times for
accomodation
-
nearest suburbs for Canberra University
are: Bruce, Kaleen, Evatt, Cook, Macquarie, Hawker, Emu Ridge and Belconnen
-
nearest suburbs for Australian National
University are: Lyneham, Watson, City, Turner, Ainslie, Dickson, Downer, Oconnor, Braddon
and Hackett
-
always keep important phone number such
as: Bangladesh High Commission, Bangladesh Australia Association,
Police, Department of Immigration, Hospital, Emergency etc with you
-
take driving lessons from an authorised
instructor and get driving licence
-
students are permitted to work 20 hours a
week. Prepare a resume with the help of senior students and keep an eye
on local papers and apply accordingly. Best way is to check in Saturday
Canberra Times jobs guide and ring them after 8.30 am (Morning).
